Two studies presented at the 2014 annual meeting of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS) reinforce the benefits of stereotactic radiosurgery for neurological diseases using the CyberKnife® system.
Neurosurgeon Dr. Alfredo Conti of Italy used CyberKnife technology to treat perioptic meningioma, a type of benign tumor that arises from the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. Results of the study revealed that the noninvasive treatment approach preserved vision while maintaining tumor control within 64 patients treated in 2-5 treatment sessions.
A second study from researchers in Italy evaluated 103 patients undergoing CyberKnife treatment for trigeminal neuralgia, a painful facial nerve disorder. After six months, more than 90 percent of patients showed significant improvement in their symptoms. CyberKnife also provided an opportunity to successfully retreat 24 patients who had relapsed within two years from their first treatment.
